De minimis aid, what it is and how much you can receive
De minimis is the simplest form of state aid. We explain what it involves, what the limit is and what to keep in mind when combining it with a grant.
De minimis aid is state aid with simplified rules, capped in value over a set period. Because of its low value, it is considered not to distort market competition, which is why it is easier to grant than standard state aid.
How the limit works
The de minimis limit is counted together for a single company over the current and two preceding years. Various forms of support count towards the pool, for example grants, write-offs or guarantees. The current level of the limit should always be confirmed in the competition rules and regulations.
Examples of de minimis support
- grants to start or grow a business,
- training and advisory co-financed from public funds,
- some tax reliefs and debt write-offs.
What to keep in mind when combining it with a grant
Before submitting an application, check how much de minimis aid the company has already received. Exceeding the limit may mean having to return the funds. That is why keeping a record of de minimis aid certificates is just as important as the application itself.
